Weekly refereeing landscape review | 2026-08-10
From Sian Massey-Ellis hanging up her flag for an FA role to James Linington’s EFL farewell and IFAB’s second-yellow VAR quiz, the week that mattered for match officials.
A week of farewells and Law homework. England’s elite pathway lost two long-serving voices from the touchline and the middle, while The IFAB kept officials sharp on VAR edge cases, throw-in trickery, and when an injured player can stay on.
## Sian Massey-Ellis MBE hangs up the flag — and steps into The FA
Assistant referee Sian Massey-Ellis MBE announced her retirement from officiating to become The FA’s Senior Manager – Women Referees, a role focused on supporting and developing female officials. Her career stretched from grassroots to the Premier League (more than 150 top-flight matches after arriving in 2010 as only the second woman to do so), FA Cups, UEFA Champions League and EUROs, and FIFA Women’s World Cups. Pro Ref and FA Refereeing marked the moment; Howard Webb called her a “powerhouse” whose advocacy will outlast the whistle. Her own line landed hardest: “To the young girl who simply loved refereeing… we did it.”

## James Linington calls time after 18 EFL seasons
Pro Ref also confirmed the retirement of EFL referee James Linington after 18 professional seasons: 487 EFL matches, including 325 in the Championship, plus the 2010 League Two Play-Off Final at Wembley. Another reminder that elite lists are built match by match — then handed on.

## IFAB: can VAR intervene on a missed second yellow?
The IFAB posed a sharp VAR protocol scenario: a player already on a yellow commits a reckless tackle that would be a second caution, but the referee on the field misses it. May the VAR inform the referee about a serious missed incident? It is exactly the kind of edge case that separates “I know the Laws” from “I can apply them under protocol pressure.”

## IFAB Law changes 2026/27: deceptive throw-in play
Separately, The IFAB’s 2026/27 Law-change series asked what the referee does when a player appears to take a throw-in, then suddenly leaves the ball for a team-mate. Deception around restarts is a practical trap at every level — worth locking in before the season’s first competitive weekends bite.

## Law 5 reminder: when injured players need not leave for a minute
The IFAB also refreshed a Law 5 point officials still get challenged on: an injured player is **not** required to leave for one minute when the Laws permit on-field treatment — including an injured goalkeeper, a goalkeeper-and-outfield collision needing attention, and same-team collisions needing treatment. Clear communication with medical staff and both benches still matters as much as the wording.

## FA Refereeing: IFAB updates session — 13 August
With the new season Laws live, FA Refereeing pushed a dedicated online IFAB updates session for Thursday 13 August at 7pm — a practical catch-up for officials who want the changes explained rather than skimmed.

## Grassroots belonging: Feiruz Abdullahi’s path in Oldham
England Football spotlighted Feiruz Abdullahi — from playing in Kenya to refereeing in Oldham — and the message that Muslim girls can belong, lead and thrive as match officials. Pair that with FA Refereeing’s Massey-Ellis tribute (“Just like everyone, she started at grassroots”) and the week’s through-line is clear: elite stories still begin at County FA courses.

## Pro Ref: Carabao Cup Round One appointments and pre-season graft
Pro Ref published match-official appointments for Carabao Cup Round One and showed the quieter work behind the whistle — pitch and classroom prep through pre-season to build physical, technical and mental foundations for the campaign ahead.

Stay sharp on the protocol quizzes, respect the careers that opened doors, and treat every grassroots appointment as the start of the next Massey-Ellis story — that is how officials keep the game moving when the season turns for real.
