How to analyse referee GPS and video together
Sync match footage with GPS and heart rate on one timeline so you can review positioning and decisions in the same moment — built for football referees.
Most referee development still splits into two jobs: watch the match back on video, then open a separate app to look at distance, sprints, and heart rate. That works until you need to answer a specific question: _where was I when that penalty was awarded? Or did I arrive late because I was too far inside? Suddenly, you are scrubbing through one timeline while trying to work out what was happening on the other.
There is a simpler way to do it: **one match, one clock, film and movement together**. You scrub once, see both at the same moment, and leave notes you can actually use before the next fixture.
Here is a practical way to do that, whether you are reviewing on your own or working with a coach or assessor.
**Why sync GPS and video at all?**
GPS and heart-rate data tell you what your body did. Video tells you what the game looked like from the outside. A lot of refereeing mistakes sit somewhere between those two pictures.
Take a late arrival to a counterattack. On video, it might look like you took a slow diagonal. On GPS, it might show a long sprint followed by a flat heart-rate line. You were working hard, but you were starting from the wrong position.
The same applies to decisions. A card might look fine from the broadcast angle, but your GPS track could show that you were 15 metres behind play when the foul happened.
When video and movement data share the same timeline, you stop having to guess. You can pause on the incident, see where you were on the pitch, check your speed and heart rate at that exact moment, and write a note that can actually help you next Saturday.
**What you need before you start**
You do not need a player-grade tracking stack. You just need three things:
* **Match footage**: a club platform export, a follow-cam recording, or footage you import from a public match URL.
* **A GPS or health export from the same fixture**: from a watch or app you already use, such as Apple Watch, Garmin, Polar, Strava, RefSix, or a native Ref-Vision Watch session.
* **A rough idea of when each recording started**: kick-off, half-time, and full-time are enough to align the clocks later.
If your watch also recorded heart rate alongside distance and speed, bring that in too. Refereeing is not just about how far you ran. How you recover between bursts matters as well.
**Step 1: Put your match footage on one timeline**
Start with the film. Upload your file or import it from a source your club already uses. Many referees take footage from the platform the home team records on and then load it into their analysis workspace.
Once the video is processing, resist the temptation to jump straight to the big incidents. First, note the kick-off timestamp in the footage if it is visible, or make a note of it against your watch start time. That small detail will make the alignment much easier in step 3.
If your footage already has highlight tags from the recording platform, keep them. They make useful bookmarks, but they are not a replacement for syncing the movement data.
**Step 2: Import your GPS and heart-rate data**
Export your session from your watch or app in a standard format such as GPX, CSV, or FIT, and import it against the same match.
If you recorded with a Ref-Vision Watch session, the GPS track and match events can land directly when the footage is ready, without needing a separate export. Either way, the aim is the same: one session tied to one match, rather than a spreadsheet sitting open in another tab.
Before you start looking at the video, check the basics:
* **Duration**: does the GPS session roughly match the length of the match?
* **Distance and sprint count**: do they look plausible for your level and role?
* **Heart rate**: if it is available, does the profile show the expected spikes during intense periods?
If something is obviously wrong, fix it now. That could be a session from the wrong day or a file that starts during the warm-up rather than at kick-off. There is no point trying to align the wrong data.
**Step 3: Align video and GPS on the same clock**
This is the step that is easiest to skip, but it is also the one that makes everything else work.
Video and GPS almost never start at exactly the same second. The camera might start recording during the walk-out, while your watch might have started when you tapped “start workout” in the changing room.
You therefore need a **sync offset**. This is simply a fixed adjustment that lines up kick-off on the film with kick-off on your GPS track.
Pick an anchor that appears in both streams:
* **Kick-off**: usually the easiest option if you can see the first whistle on video and the first movement spike on GPS.
* **Half-time**: useful if the first-half footage has been trimmed differently.
* **A clear sprint**: for example, if you know you sprinted over to show a yellow card in the 23rd minute, find that moment on both timelines and adjust the offset until they line up.
In Ref-Vision, set the sync offset once for the match. The GPS charts, pitch heatmap, and any watch events will retime automatically when you adjust it.
Get this right and scrubbing through the match feels natural. Get it wrong and every note you make could be a few seconds out. That is enough to make a coaching conversation confusing.
**Step 4: Scrub together and read the picture**
Once everything is aligned, review the match as one continuous session rather than switching between two separate apps.
**Use the video player as your main control.** As you move through the match, look at:
* **Your track on the pitch map**: are you too central, too wide, or lagging behind the counterattack?
* **Speed and heart rate**: did your intensity spike before or after the key moment?
* **Heatmaps**: once the pitch corners are set, where did you actually spend the match rather than where you remember being?
Pause on the incidents that matter: penalty areas, mass confrontations, quick transitions, and decisions you were unsure about.
At each pause, ask yourself three questions:
1. Where was I in relation to play?
2. What was my physical state? Was I going flat out, recovering, or static?
3. Would a different starting position have changed what I saw?
That third question is where GPS really earns its place. Video can show you the error. Movement data can often help explain why it happened.
**Step 5: Add coach notes and tags on the same moments**
Analysis is much more useful when you capture your thoughts while the picture is still fresh.
**Tags** mark moments in the footage, such as a foul, card, positioning error, or good diagonal. **Feedback** is where you or a collaborator can write what should happen differently next time: an earlier start on the transition, a wider default position, or quicker whistle timing.
Because the notes are timestamped to the video, they stay linked to the GPS window at that exact moment. A mentor can open the match later, jump straight to their comment, and see exactly where you were on the map when they wrote it. There is no need for a separate briefing just to explain what happened.
If you work with a coach or assessor, invite them to the workspace before your review call. They can leave feedback on clips in their own time, and you can reply or add your own notes.
Ten collaborators is enough for most referee setups, whether that means a coach, mentor, assessor, or a small peer group.
**What good combined analysis looks like**
You do not need to review all 90 minutes every week. A focused 20-minute review of five or six moments can be much more useful than trying to work through the entire match.
Prioritise:
* **Goals and major decisions**: look at your positioning at the point of contact.
* **Transition moments**: identify when play changed quickly and you were caught ball-watching.
* **Fitness patterns in the last 20 minutes**: look for late spri
